Giallo Veneziano granite
Description of colouring and granulometry: uniform, coarse-grained granite of an ochre-yellow to golden brown colour whose structure recalls that of gneiss. The main components reach up to 10 cm in size, at times with elongated and irregular potash-feldspar. Small crystals of light-grey, transparent quartz and elongated granules of biotite can be found amongst the former. Biotite can also be found in the form of small chips surrounded by feldspar. The large granules of biotite have a striking deep brown colour which becomes paler towards the outside. This appearance is typical of tropical granite and it arises from the iron contained in the biotite which, through weathering over the course of millions of years, was transformed into brown-coloured limonite. It contains traces of red garnet crystals which measure up to 1.5 cm in size. It is quarried in Nova Venecia in the state of Espirito Santo. Availability: medium. Other commercial names: Yellow Venice, Amarelo Venezia, Venetian Yellow, Giallo Veneziano. Prevailing applications: interior and exterior. Wall cladding, interior flooring, slab works. Finitions-textures: smooth, polish. Physical and mechanical properties: volumetric weight: 2629 kg/m3; absorption coefficient: 0.32%; apparent porosity: 0.84%; compression breaking load: 900 kg/cm2; compression breaking load after gelivity: 815 kg/cm2; bending strength: 95 kg/cm2; coefficient of thermal expansion: 7.1 mm/m°C; shock resistance: 58 cm; wear from abrasion according to Boehme: 5-8 cm3/50cm2; Mohs hardness: >5. -------------------- Description from TRE Collection: materials, manufacturing and uses ANNUAL STONE by Beatrice Zoppas |
