Description of colouring and granulometry: relatively uniform granite. Charnockite is an imitation granite and is made up prevalently of a dark green plutonic rock which derives from the passage of magma from underneath the earth’s crust to the surface. The dark olive green colouring is due to the presence of pyroxene andhypersthene. Golden brown and olive yellow pigments can be found at the edges of the grains which give the stone its interesting decoration. These yellow parts derive from the transformation of the hypersthenes over millions of years. Quartz is present in the form of small colourless or grey-blue crystals. It is quarried near Ubatuba between San Paolo and Rio de Janeiro in the state of San Paolo. Availability: medium. Prevailing applications: interior and exterior. Wall cladding, flooring, slab works and steps staircase. Finitions-textures: smooth, polish. Mineralogical composition: alkalifeldspar 60%, plagioclase-feldspar 20%, other (pyroxene, hypersthenes, quartz). Physical and mechanical properties: volumetric weight: 2695 kg/m3; absorption coefficient: 0.22%; apparent porosity: 0.4-1.5%; compression breaking load: 1922 kg/cm2; compression breaking load after gelivity: 1744 kg/cm2; bending strength: 175 kg/cm2; coefficient of thermal expansion: 0.0065 mm/m°C; shock resistance: 40 cm; wear from abrasion according to Boehme: 5-8 cm3/50cm2; Mohs hardness: >5. -------------------- Description from TRE Collection: materials, manufacturing and uses ANNUAL STONE by Beatrice Zoppas |
